June 5 marks World Environment Day. In 2020, this date carried a particularly special meaning. At EFSVALVES, we wanted to share a reflection after living through such an unusual period as the COVID-19 pandemic, and after seeing how that global disruption unexpectedly reshaped our relationship with the environment.
The health crisis brought serious human, social and economic consequences. At the same time, the abrupt slowdown in mobility, production patterns and daily routines made several environmental effects visible with unusual clarity.
Environmental lessons from an exceptional period
- Lower energy demand: Global reductions in economic activity and mobility resulted in a significant drop in electricity consumption, with demand falling by up to 20 percent in some regions. This also affected global coal consumption and highlighted the connection between industrial activity, mobility and energy use.
- Sharp traffic reduction: Air travel and road traffic decreased dramatically at the height of the pandemic, leading to visible improvements in air quality in many cities and reminding us how strongly transport patterns influence urban emissions.
- Recovery of natural ecosystems: Wildlife began to reappear in urban areas, green spaces, rivers and ports where it had long been absent. It was a quiet but powerful reminder of the environment’s regenerative capacity when human pressure is reduced.
- Social reconnection and healthier habits: Isolation encouraged collaboration among neighbors, mutual support and new ways to share daily moments. Attention to personal health also increased, with renewed interest in conscious eating, regular exercise and more balanced routines.
- Digital transformation and remote work: Videoconferencing tools, online payments and remote work became part of everyday life. These structural changes also helped reduce the carbon footprint associated with commuting and certain logistics activities.
- Domestic creativity: In the midst of uncertainty, many households rediscovered the value of time at home. Cooking, family routines and small daily rituals became meaningful experiences in a period marked by distance and uncertainty.
